 Product Description

These ultrabooks sold out at Lenovo.com for $649. You can still get a refurbished one on Amazon for $387 and on Walmart.com for $399. Or you can buy one right here for less than half that price with a much better warranty. Why is our price lower than everyone else's? Because we buy direct from the company or government agency that originally bought the equipment new. We refurbish it and warranty it in house right here in Austin, Texas. And we sell direct to you. Do you have any idea how much money you waste on Amazon or any of these other marketplaces? Everything you buy there has fees for Amazon or whoever built in. The product has to shipped to Amazon and then you. It gets handled twice as much, warehoused, stored... All of that costs a money. And that money is all built-in to the price you pay on Amazon, eBay and all the rest. If we sold this laptop on Amazon we would have to charge over $200 just to get the $161 we are selling it for. So skip the middle man and buy direct from the source, DiscountElectronics.com.

Ultradurable Construction

lenovo-laptop-thinkpad-x140e-keyboard.png

A rubber bumper around the top cover absorbs the force of bumps to the side of the system. The corners are 33-percent stronger, to reduce damage when dropped at an angle. The bezel is thicker, to protect the LED panel. The hinges and brackets have been strengthened, to last 50,000 cycles and to withstand more force to the cover. Recessed ports and a reduced gap between keys help prevent accidental damage from a bored child's exploring fingers. This is one tough machine.

MIL-SPEC Tested

Military-specification testing validates the ruggedness, durability, and quality of ThinkPad products by testing against eight parameters: high pressure, humidity, vibration, high temperature, temperature shock, low pressure (15,000 ft), low temperature, and dust.

ThinkVantage Active Protection System

For models with traditional hard drives, an accelerometer detects movement and stops the drive when a fall or similar event is detected. Rubber mounts are used for the hard disk drive (rather than rails) and the HDD connector is not rigidly attached to the board, so the connector absorbs shock and impact and protects against system damage.

Award-Winning Keyboard

Full-sized and spill-resistant, the legendary ThinkPad ergonomic keyboard is renowned for its full array of keys, excellent feel, and TrackPoint® pointing device. And now it's optimized for Windows 8 with convenient multimedia buttons, LED status indicators, Function-lock capability, and immediate access to view apps. Plus, a larger, smooth TrackPad with 5-point click integration — indicated by subtle bumps and stripes — can be configured multiple ways through Settings.

Fast Data Transfer

Move data between the X140e and other devices quickly with USB 3.0 — it's up to 10 times faster than previous USB technologies and backward-compatible with USB 2.0.

Integrated HD Webcam

Integrated HD Webcam

The low-light-sensitive, 720p HD webcam with face-tracking, plus dual digital-array microphones, will help you enjoy web conferences or online video chats like you’re really there.

Dolby Advanced Audio

This suite of audio technologies enables your ThinkPad to deliver a crisp, clear surround sound experience over its built-in stereo speakers. The technology increases audio clarity for VoIP applications, maximizes volume output without distortion, and improves dialogue clarity when watching videos. Enjoy an immersive surround sound experience whether listening to a lecture or kicking back with a movie.

Powered USB Port

Enjoy the benefits of an always-on port, charging your USB devices without having to turn on your laptop. Great for charging your cellphone on the plane or on the go.

HDMI Output

For easy connection to a television, monitor or other display.

Power Manager Software

Lenovo's exclusive technology intuitively limits the energy drain of idle processes and provides an extra surge of energy when needed most, stretching your system's unplugged run-time to the max.

VGA Port

Many customers still require a VGA port for projector connections in classrooms, and native VGA means no dongles for them to buy/lose/replace.

  1. Neat Little Fast Laptop, Great Value

Posted by John on Sep 11th 2017

Ordered the Laptop with the Windows 10 Upgrade from 8. Came with a sheet saying how to activate windows 10. Had to find a 25 digit code on laptop, which did not exist. checked the windows 10 on the unit and it showed as activated. Guess Discount Electronics guys activated it when they loaded it. Wish they had not included that sheet which had me running in circles for a while.

The unit is excellent with the exception that the print is a little small on the screen. Probably to be expected because of the small screen. I will see if I can adjust the size with Windows 10. Even though I have only had it a few days, I am so far very pleased.

  2. surprisingly powerful, but not slim

Posted by Michael Carlson on Jan 22nd 2017

I'm overall very pleased with this little laptop. That said, I would not call it an 'ultrabook' due to thickness and weight, and it's clearly more of an industrial-strength, 'education market' item. What's remarkable about this laptop is that it has the internals of laptops coating 3x-4x more; the only exception is the AMD CPU, but it's no slouch.

Pros: superb battery life, great keyboard, bullet-proof build quality, very good USB support (2x 3.0, 1x 2.0; 2.0 port can be powered while off, so useful as a giant power bank (can be enabled / disabled in BIOS), HDMI *and* VGA outputs, and dedicated graphics.

Cons: somewhat chunky and heavy for a modern laptop in the 12" screen category, no keyboard backlight (also lacking Lenovo's alternate LED 'lamp'), very difficult to get working with Linux.

Be particularly cautioned if you want to run Linux on the x140e. Some distros may go smoother than others, but the Broadcom wifi (BCM43228) and Realtek Ethernet (RTL8111/8168/8411) chipsets are known to be difficult. I chose CentOS 7 for its combo of Enterprise Linux foundation and long-term support model. The only way to get wifi working was is to copy Broadcom's proprietary source tarball to the laptop via USB stick and build it there. I still don't have Ethernet working, which is a rare Linux challenge in 2017.

  3. A solid small laptop

Posted by Seth M on Dec 12th 2016

The ThinkPad x140e is a very interesting little laptop. It has a wider selection of ports than you usually find on an 11" laptop (3 USB, card reader, both VGA and HDMI, and even Ethernet!). Both memory and hard drive are standard parts and can be upgraded, which are unusual on laptops of this size. The CPU and GPU aren't screamers, but they are adequate for general tasks and even some light gaming. (I played Star Wars: The Old Republic on mine. It's slow, even at lowest graphics settings, but it's playable.) It's built like a tank; I haven't dropped mine to test this personally, but the rubber bumper around the screen seems like it would protect against typical falls and the hefty case looks like it would withstand considerable abuse. Like most modern ThinkPads, it has both a TrackPoint and a trackpad for pointing devices; the trackpad is small by modern standards, but it's usable.

There's one notable downfall of this laptop: it's heavy! It's thicker than a typical 11" (over twice as thick as a MacBook Air) and heavier as well, coming in at just shy of four pounds. That's the price you pay for durability, low cost, easily-replaced components, and its large array of ports. Also, in contrast to most ThinkPads, it's sorely lacking in indicator lights—it doesn't even have a caps-lock light, and instead uses an on-screen indicator! Finally, the processor is quad-core, but with four cores that are slow individually; if you're doing something that demands single-core performance, this laptop will have a hard time. (If you're doing anything that really demands performance, this isn't the laptop for you anyway.)

If you want Chromebook price and near-Chromebook size with better-than-Chromebook specs and a full version of Windows, this will do nicely. If you're looking for a legitimate desktop replacement, you want to look elsewhere. Personally, I'm quite pleased with mine, and would recommend the x140e to anybody with light-duty needs.

  4. This is all you need especially if you move around a lot

Posted by Sheryl on Dec 8th 2016

Yeah it does not have all the bells and whistles but quite frankly I do not use them. I need the basics 90% of the time and have more robust laptop for other stuff. I move around a lot and have destroyed screens on other laptops really like the durability of this model. Came in excellent condition ...wish had newer operating system so had to go back a little on how to do things. Durable, reliable, easy to use...would be great for a kid to use as well.
